National Day of the United Arab Emirates is a public holiday commemorating the unification of the emirates into a single state. It is celebrated annually on December 2.

History and significance

* On December 2, 1971, six emirates — Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, and Fujairah — declared the formation of the UAE federation.
* In February 1972, the seventh emirate — Ras Al Khaimah — joined the federation.
* This day symbolizes the birth of the state, the strengthening of unity, and the beginning of a new stage in the region's development.

How it is celebrated

* Streets, buildings, and cars are decorated with flags and colors of the national flag: red, green, white, and black.
* Concerts, cultural events, dance and music performances dedicated to the traditions and heritage of the emirates are held.
* Large-scale fireworks and light shows attract special attention. In Dubai, for example, laser shows at the Burj Khalifa are famous.
* The holiday takes place in the atmosphere of family and public events open to residents and visitors of the country.

Official status

* National Day is an official public holiday in the UAE.

* Respect for the founders and the first president of the UAE — Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.
