The International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples, celebrated on August 9, was established by the UN General Assembly in 1994. This day is dedicated to recognizing the unique cultures, traditions, languages and rights of indigenous peoples, who often face social, economic and environmental challenges that threaten their existence and identity.

Indigenous peoples are peoples who maintain cultural, social and economic systems distinct from dominant groups in society. They have a unique connection to the land they have inhabited since ancient times. Such peoples include the Aborigines of Australia, the Indians of North and South America, the peoples of Siberia and the Russian Far East, and the indigenous peoples of Africa and Asia.

Objectives and significance of the day
Protection of indigenous peoples' rights to land, natural resources, culture, language and self-government.
Raising awareness of issues such as discrimination, inequality, human rights violations and marginalization. Preservation of indigenous peoples’ cultural heritage, traditions and languages, many of which are threatened with extinction.

Indigenous Peoples’ Issues
Land and Resources. Many indigenous peoples face displacement from their homelands due to resource extraction, infrastructure construction or agro-industry.
Cultural and Linguistic Extinction. The disappearance of native languages and the loss of cultural traditions due to globalization and pressure from dominant cultures.
Discrimination and Marginalization. In some countries, indigenous peoples experience discrimination in access to education, health care and employment.

Events include cultural festivals, conferences, exhibitions and discussions that highlight the problems and achievements of indigenous communities.
