International Childfree Day is celebrated annually on August 1. This day is dedicated to people who have consciously chosen not to have children. It emphasizes every person's right to determine their own life path and recognizes the value of those who lead full and meaningful lives outside of parenthood.

Origin of the holiday
The holiday was established in 2013 by American author Laura Carroll, a specialist on the topic of voluntary childlessness. The date of August 1 was chosen in honor of the presentation in 1973 of the so-called “Childfree Woman of the Year Award,” organized by the American organization “The National Alliance for Optional Parenthood.”

Goals and values
International Childfree Day draws attention to the following principles:
– recognition of the right to voluntary childlessness as a socially acceptable choice
– combating the stigmatization of people without children
– raising awareness of the demographic, ecological, and personal aspects of childlessness
– expanding dialogue about freedom, autonomy, and diverse life paths
– supporting and uniting people who adhere to the childfree philosophy

How it is celebrated
Although the holiday is not widely celebrated, it is actively observed online and within communities around the world through:
– publications of personal stories and manifestos
– discussions and online forums about the childfree choice
– interviews with activists and authors promoting the idea of childlessness
– actions in support of reproductive autonomy
– the annual presentation of the “Childfree” award to notable representatives of the movement

Childfree vs. childless
It is important to distinguish the terms:
– "childfree" — people who consciously choose not to have children
– "childless" — people who do not have children for reasons beyond their control (e.g., medical)

Symbolic meaning
International Childfree Day is not so much a counterpoint to parenthood as it is an affirmation of the right to individual choice and respect for personal freedom. It serves as a platform for open discussion of modern forms of identity and life self-determination.
