International Day of Women in Diplomacy
June 24, Tuesday

History and purpose
On June 24, 2022, the UN adopted resolution A/RES/76/269, proclaiming this day as the International Day of Women in Diplomacy. The purpose is to recognize the contributions of women in diplomacy, promote gender equality, and strengthen their participation in international processes at all levels.
The resolution was initiated by a group of countries, including the Maldives, El Salvador, Latvia, Malta, and others.
Significance
Women diplomats play a key role in conflict prevention, peacebuilding, human rights protection, and sustainable development.
Their participation improves the quality of decisions and fosters inclusiveness, which is essential for achieving sustainable development goals.
How is it celebrated?
* Events, discussions, and forums are organized, often with the participation of UN officials, diplomats, and experts. For example, the theme in 2024 was “Leadership in Multilateral Diplomacy”.
* National and regional organizations (such as UN Women) host panel sessions, share experiences, and advocate for feminist foreign policy.
* Speeches by leaders, such as the Director-General of the UN Office at Geneva, emphasize the need to break glass ceilings and recognize the efforts of women diplomats.
Interesting facts
* As of January 2023, around 34 women serve as heads of state or government in 31 countries worldwide.
* Women diplomats are significantly involved in peace negotiations: between 1992 and 2019, women made up 13% of negotiators and 6% of mediators and signatories.
* The International Olympic Committee welcomed the establishment of the day and called for increased female leadership in sports governance.
Why is it important?
Women’s participation in diplomacy is not just a matter of fairness. It is a means of improving international cooperation and creating conditions for long-term peace, democracy, and sustainable development.
