Palm Sunday
March 24, Sunday
The Entry of the Lord into Jerusalem, also known as Palm Sunday, is one of the main holidays of the Christian calendar. It is celebrated a week before Easter and marks the triumphal entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem.History of the holiday
This date is associated with the Gospel event described in the New Testament. According to legend, Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey, and the people, greeting him as the Messiah, spread their clothes and palm branches before him. In the Christian tradition, this symbolizes the recognition of Jesus as king and Savior.
Meaning of the holiday
Symbolism of branches. In the Orthodox tradition, palm branches are replaced by willow branches, as they are the first to bloom at this time of year in a temperate climate.
Spiritual meaning. The holiday emphasizes the humility of Christ, his readiness to suffer for the salvation of humanity, and also calls on believers to internal purification and preparation for Holy Week.
How it is celebrated
Worship. On the previous evening and in the morning, solemn services are held in churches. Willow or palm branches are blessed and brought home by believers.
Traditions. The blessed branches are kept throughout the year as a symbol of blessing.
In some countries, processions are held in memory of the triumphal entry of Christ into Jerusalem.
