World Day for Laboratory Animals

World Laboratory Animal Day is celebrated annually on April 24. This day was established to draw public attention to the use of animals in scientific research and testing, as well as to protect the rights of animals that are subjected to laboratory experiments.

Laboratory Animal Day was established in 1979 on the initiative of the British organization National Anti-Vivisection Society (NAVS), one of the first groups to oppose animal experiments. In 1980, this day received support from the UN and was recognized internationally.

Alternatives to animal experiments
Modern technologies and research methods offer many alternative ways to conduct scientific experiments without the use of animals:

Cell and tissue cultures. Experiments can be carried out on human cells and tissues, which avoids the use of animals and at the same time obtains more accurate data.
Computer modeling. Modern computer programs are able to model processes in the body, helping scientists study the effects of drugs and chemicals.
Organoids and artificial organs. Creating miniature copies of human organs from cells allows us to study their functions and reactions to drugs.
Research on volunteers. Some tests can be conducted with the participation of volunteers, which reduces the need to use animals.

How is World Laboratory Animal Day celebrated
On this day, events are held by animal rights activists, environmentalists and animal rights organizations. The main forms of activity are:

Marches and protests. In different countries, activists hold protests against the use of animals in laboratories.
Educational campaigns. Lectures, seminars and webinars are held on ethical issues and alternatives to animal experiments.
Public discussions. Scientists, legislators and representatives of animal rights organizations discuss possible ways to reduce the use of animals in experiments and improve their living conditions.
