Marshmallows are a sweet treat that has a long history. They were originally made from the root of the Althaea officinalis plant (mallow), which was used to make a syrup with medicinal properties. Modern marshmallows as we know them were created in the 19th century using sugar, gelatin, and corn syrup. Today, marshmallows come in a variety of varieties and shapes, from classic white to multi-colored and flavored.
