New South Wales Bank Holiday is a regional holiday officially granted only to bank employees in the Australian state of New South Wales. This day is not a public holiday but remains a tradition within the banking sector.

When it is celebrated
The holiday is observed annually on the first Monday of August.

Who celebrates

* Formally, the day off is granted only to employees of banks and financial institutions regulated by the government.
* For most other industries, it is a normal working day.
* However, some companies may voluntarily provide a day off or a shortened workday.

History
Bank holidays were introduced in the 19th century in Britain and its colonies, including Australia, as days when banks were closed for settlements, audits, and employee rest. Although many of these holidays were later canceled or replaced, in New South Wales this traditional bank holiday remains in effect.

How it is celebrated
Since the holiday is not universal:

* most events are not held officially;
* for bank workers, this day may be used for rest, trips, or family matters;
* sometimes corporate or professional events related to banking take place in institutions.

Interesting fact
Despite its name, the New South Wales Bank Holiday does not significantly affect the everyday life of the population — shops, schools, and government services continue to operate as usual.
