Hıdırellez
May 6, Monday
Hiderlez (also known as Hidyrlez, Hidyrellez) is a traditional spring festival celebrated in the Balkans, Turkey, Crimea and some other regions. It takes place on May 6 (Gregorian calendar) or April 23 (Julian calendar). The festival is associated with the beginning of the spring period, the renewal of nature and the arrival of summer.Origins of the festival
The name Hiderlez comes from the combination of the names of two Muslim saints:
Khızır (Khidr) - the protector of travelers and the giver of life.
Ilyas - a prophet, patron of water and fertility.
The festival has pre-Christian and pre-Islamic roots associated with the cult of nature, the revival of the earth and the change of seasons. It was later adapted by various religions, including Islam and Christianity.
Traditions of the festival
Making fires. Jump over fire to cleanse oneself of misfortunes.
Decorating trees. Ribbons or notes with wishes are hung on the branches.
Bathing in rivers and springs. It is believed that water on this day has a special cleansing power.
Festive dishes. Lamb dishes are prepared (for example, pilaf), since it is believed that the sacrifice of a sheep will bring prosperity. Special breads are baked.
