International Human Rights Day is celebrated annually on December 10. It was established in 1948 to commemorate the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, a key document that proclaimed the fundamental rights and freedoms that should be protected for every person, regardless of race, gender, religion, nationality, social status, or other characteristics.

Historical Context
After the horrors of World War II, the global community realized the need for documents that would guarantee the respect of human rights for all. On December 10, 1948, the UN General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights — the first international document defining the rights and freedoms of all people. It contains 30 articles, which include such fundamental rights as the right to life, liberty, security, freedom of speech, religion, the right to work, education, and many others.

Themes and Events
Each year, International Human Rights Day is dedicated to a specific theme reflecting current challenges and priorities in the field of human rights. Themes may focus on fighting discrimination, equality, protecting the rights of women, children, migrants, or addressing the right to education, healthcare, and promoting social justice.

The main activities of this day include:

Conferences and forums. Discussion of human rights issues at global and regional levels and ways to address them.
Actions and demonstrations. Public initiatives and actions in support of human rights movements.
Awareness campaigns. Raising awareness through media, social networks, and educational programs.
Awards and prizes. Presenting awards for contributions to the protection of human rights (such as the UN Human Rights Prize).
International Human Rights Day reminds us that human rights are an integral part of every person’s life, and their protection must be a priority for every society. This day inspires us to continue fighting for equality, justice, and dignity for all, regardless of origin, beliefs, or abilities.
