International St. John's Day
June 24, Tuesday

Historical roots
The holiday has ancient Christian and pre-Christian origins:
• The church tradition is based on the Gospel of Luke, which states that John was born six months before Jesus. Therefore his feast day is set on 24 June — exactly six months before Christmas.
• In pre-Christian times this day coincided with the summer solstice, so many cultures included fire, water, fertility and cleansing rituals in the celebrations.
Where and how it is celebrated
In different countries the holiday has taken on unique forms:
France (La Saint‑Jean)
• Bonfires are lit, with folk festivities, dancing and singing.
• The holiday is especially popular in Provence and Brittany, where pagan elements are preserved.
Spain and Latin America
• In Catalonia and Valencia they organise the “Night of Sant Joan” (La Nit de Sant Joan) with fireworks and beach parties.
• In Latin American countries Catholic processions, traditional treats and dances are added.
Scandinavia (Juhannus in Finland, Midsommar in Sweden)
• Although formally not always named for John, these midsummer celebrations are rooted in his tradition.
• It is customary to celebrate with family, gather by lakes, bathe and jump over bonfires.
Portugal (Festa de São João)
• One of the biggest celebrations takes place in Porto, where people take to the streets with plastic hammers, launch fireworks and grill sardines.
• It is seen as a time of love, reconciliation and merriment.
Canadian Francophone regions
• In Québec St. John’s Day is officially recognised as the national holiday of French‑speaking culture (La Fête nationale du Québec).
• Concerts, parades and cultural events are held.
Symbolism and traditions
• Bonfires symbolise light, sun and purification.
• Water symbolises renewal: in some countries people bathe until dawn.
• Greenery and herbs are used as symbols of fertility and protection from evil spirits.
• Divination, especially on the night of 24 June, is common in Eastern Europe and the Balkans.
Modern significance
Today the holiday combines religious and secular traditions, remaining an important cultural event:
• For believers it is an opportunity to honour John the Baptist.
• For secular societies it is a celebration of the sun, nature and summer, uniting generations.
Interesting facts
• John the Baptist is one of the few Christian saints whose birth is celebrated separately.
• St. John’s Day is especially popular in countries with Catholic and Lutheran heritage.
• In folk tradition this day was considered magical: the Slavic “Ivan Kupala Night” partly overlaps in meaning and timing with St. John’s Day.
