History of the holiday
The holiday was established in 1922 at the initiative of the Minister of National Education Stoyan Omarchevski. Initially, it was dedicated to the memory of Saint John of Rila — the heavenly patron of Bulgaria and a symbol of spirituality. Later, the holiday became a day to honor all Bulgarian "awakeners" — educators, writers, priests, revolutionaries, and public figures who awakened national consciousness during the Ottoman rule and the period of national revival.
