History of the holiday
After the signing of the Treaty of Berlin in 1878, Bulgaria was divided: there was the Principality of Bulgaria and the autonomous region of Eastern Rumelia under the rule of the Ottoman Empire. However, Bulgarians aspired to national unity.
On September 6, 1885, an uprising occurred in the city of Plovdiv, resulting in Eastern Rumelia declaring its union with the Principality of Bulgaria. This event became known as the unification of Bulgaria. Despite international tensions and the risk of war, Bulgaria managed to defend this decision.
Traditions of the holiday
The Unification Day is celebrated throughout the country, especially with great solemnity in Plovdiv, where the historic event took place. On this day:
* military parades and wreath-laying ceremonies at monuments to the unification fighters are held;
* concerts, cultural events, and folk festivities take place;
