World First Aid Day

World First Aid Day is an annual event celebrated on the second Saturday of September to raise awareness of the importance of first aid and to teach people how to provide it in emergency situations. The holiday was established by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) in 2000.

Goals of World First Aid Day
Raising awareness. One of the main aspects of this day is to convey to people the importance of having first aid knowledge and skills. In an emergency, the first minutes can be decisive, and a person nearby can save a life before the arrival of medical personnel.

First aid training. Trainings and educational events are organized where participants learn the basics of first aid: how to stop bleeding, perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), apply bandages, provide assistance with burns and other actions in emergency situations.

Expanding access to training. The Red Cross and Red Crescent are working hard to make first aid training accessible to all segments of the population, regardless of age, gender, social status or location.

Reducing injuries and deaths. Timely first aid can prevent serious consequences and even death. World First Aid Day aims to reduce the number of fatal and serious accidents by teaching people basic life-saving skills.

Events and training
World First Aid Day includes many events and activities held by the Red Cross, Red Crescent, medical institutions and other organizations. Among them:

Mass training. First aid training sessions are organized in squares, parks and workplaces. Participants can learn the correct technique for cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), wound care, assistance in case of fainting and other skills.

Webinars and online courses. In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, many educational activities have been moved online. First aid courses are available online for anyone to take part in.

Awareness campaigns. Educational programs and awareness campaigns through the media and social networks highlight the importance of first aid and encourage people to get trained. Brochures, posters, and video tutorials are also distributed to help people quickly learn basic skills.
