Meaning of the Night of Bara'ah
The name "Laylat al-Bara'ah" translates to "Night of Liberation" or "Night of Forgiveness" as it is the time when Muslims believe that Allah forgives sins and frees people from their burdens. According to Islamic tradition, the Night of Bara'ah is a time when people's destinies for the coming year are determined, deeds to be done are recorded, and who is destined to live or die during the coming year is decided.
This night is considered one of the most important nights in the Islamic calendar after the Night of Power (Laylat al-Qadr) in the month of Ramadan. The Hadith of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) mentions that on this night, the doors of Allah's forgiveness are wide open for those who sincerely repent and turn to Him with supplications.
Traditions and Rituals
Muslims around the world celebrate Laylat al-Baraa with the following traditions:
Prayers and night worship (Tahajjud). Many Muslims spend the night in prayer, asking Allah for forgiveness, guidance, and blessings. Tahajjud prayer, an additional act of worship performed at night, is especially popular.
Reading the Quran. On this night, Muslims try to read the Quran, reflect on its meaning, and make dua (prayers) for their loved ones, especially the deceased.
Fasting. Some Muslims fast on the eve or day of Laylat al-Bara'ah to express their humility and devotion to Allah. Fasting on the 14th and 15th of Sha'ban is considered an important act of worship.
Forgiveness and repentance. On this night, many believers try to ask forgiveness for their mistakes and sins, both before Allah and before people. This night is intended for self-purification and renewal of the spiritual state.
Giving alms (sadaqah). An important part of the Night of Bara'ah is giving alms to the poor and needy, which helps believers purify their wealth and improve their position before Allah.
