On April 22, 1500, an expedition led by Portuguese explorer Pedro Álvares Cabral reached the coast of what would later become Brazil. The land was named "Terra de Santa Cruz" (Land of the Holy Cross).
The discovery occurred during the sea route to India, which was part of the Portuguese efforts to consolidate their trading empire.
The region later became known as Brazil, named after the local tree, Brazilwood, which was used to make the dye.
