Tiradentes Day is celebrated in Brazil every year on April 21. This national holiday is dedicated to the memory of Joaquim José da Silva Xavier, better known as Tiradentes, a national hero who played an important role in the struggle for Brazilian independence from Portuguese colonial rule.

Tiradentes was the leader of the Inconfidência Mineira movement, an attempt by colonists in the state of Minas Gerais in 1789 to free themselves from Portuguese rule. The movement was inspired by the American and French Revolutions. After the plot was discovered, Tiradentes was arrested, found guilty, and executed by hanging on April 21, 1792. His body was cut into pieces to intimidate other rebels.
