History of the holiday
On April 12, 1961, Yuri Gagarin made the world's first orbital flight around the Earth in the Vostok 1 spacecraft. This historic flight lasted 108 minutes and opened a new era in space exploration. This day became a symbol of the victory of science and technology and was recognized both in the Soviet Union and around the world.
In 1962, April 12 was officially proclaimed Cosmonautics Day in the USSR, and since 2011, by decision of the UN General Assembly, this day has been recognized as the International Day of Human Space Flight.
