Saint Procopius was a famous monk, and in popular beliefs he was credited with powers associated with changing the weather. He was revered as a saint who "transferred" winter into spring, or, as people say, "overwintered" winter, helping the earth prepare for the new season.
Symbolism of the holiday
Dorogorushitel is one of the popular nicknames of Saint Procopius. This word is associated with the popular belief that Procopius opens the way for spring, and the winter cold cannot linger after his holiday.
The holiday also had a practical meaning for farmers. On this day, they addressed the saint with prayers for a good harvest and the timely arrival of spring.
Traditions and customs
Weather. One of the main signs of the holiday was observing the weather. If there were severe frosts on this day, then a long winter was predicted. If there was warm weather, this was considered a sign that spring would soon come.
Folk beliefs. It was believed that if there was no snow on this day, then spring would come early. If snow fell, spring would be late.
Work customs. In the village on this day, they often prepared for sowing and repaired tools, and also monitored the condition of animals and strengthened homes.
