It is associated with the name of Saint Mary of Egypt in the Orthodox tradition and has its roots in ancient peasant beliefs. This day symbolizes the beginning of real winter, when the first stable frosts and snow become commonplace.

History and meaning
The name "Light the Snow" reflects the idea that the snow during this period becomes brighter and "glowing" against the background of short winter days. People believed that from this moment on, the winter journey becomes easier and safer, because the snow falls densely and covers the ground.

Folk traditions and signs
Winter preparations. It was believed that by this day all household chores should be completed, and supplies for the winter should be made.

Signs about the weather
If on this day the snow shines brightly in the sun, the winter will be frosty and snowy.

If the snow is soft and loose, spring will be early and warm.

Burning old things. In some regions, there was a tradition of burning unnecessary things, symbolically making room for new things and protecting the house from troubles.
