History of the holiday
Defender of the Fatherland Day traces its history back to 1918, when February 23 in Soviet Russia was celebrated as Red Army Day. At that time, the Red Army resisted the invasion of German troops, and this date became a symbol of the beginning of the defense of the young Soviet republic. Later, the holiday was renamed the Day of the Soviet Army and Navy, and after the collapse of the Soviet Union, it became Defender of the Fatherland Day.
