Freedom Day is an important national holiday in Belarus, celebrated on March 25. This day symbolizes the Belarusians' desire for independence and is the day when the Belarusian People's Republic (BPR) was proclaimed in 1918. The holiday, also known as Independence Day, symbolizes the struggle for sovereignty and independence of the country.

History of the holiday
On March 25, 1918, the Act of Proclamation of Independence of the Belarusian People's Republic was signed in Minsk. This act marked the beginning of Belarus's quest for independence from the Russian Empire and, subsequently, from the Soviet Union. However, the BPR lasted only a few months, as in 1919, the territory of Belarus was occupied by Soviet troops and the republic was annexed.

Holiday events
Rallies and marches. Rallies and demonstrations dedicated to the independence and freedom of the country are traditionally held on Freedom Day. These events can be both official and unauthorized, which sometimes leads to mass detentions.

Cultural events. In a number of cities, cultural events, exhibitions, lectures and concerts dedicated to the history of Belarus and the fight for its independence can be held.
