World Osteoporosis Day is observed annually on October 20. This day is dedicated to raising awareness about the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of osteoporosis and metabolic bone diseases. It marks the start of a year-long campaign organized by the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF), involving more than 90 countries.

History of the holiday

World Osteoporosis Day was first observed on October 20, 1996, at the initiative of the National Osteoporosis Society of the United Kingdom with support from the European Commission. Since 1997, the organization and coordination of this day have been taken over by the International Osteoporosis Foundation. In 1998, the World Health Organization (WHO) joined in supporting this day.

Importance of osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a condition in which bones become porous and fragile, increasing the risk of fractures even under minimal stress. It is often called the "silent disease" because in its early stages it can be asymptomatic, and people may not realize they have the condition until a fracture occurs.

Goals of World Osteoporosis Day

* Raising awareness: informing the public about the risks of osteoporosis and preventive measures.
* Education and training: providing information about a healthy lifestyle, proper nutrition, and physical exercises to maintain bone health.
* Encouraging early diagnosis: promoting screening to detect osteoporosis at an early stage.
* Supporting patients: providing access to information and resources for people living with osteoporosis.

How to observe this day

* Get screened: undergo bone density tests for early detection of osteoporosis.
* Participate in events: join campaigns, lectures, and seminars focused on osteoporosis.
* Support campaigns: share information about osteoporosis prevention through social media and other channels.
* Education and awareness: participate in educational programs aimed at increasing awareness about the condition.

Why it matters

Osteoporosis is a significant public health issue, especially among older adults. Early detection and prevention can greatly reduce the risk of fractures and improve patients’ quality of life. World Osteoporosis Day helps draw attention to this issue and promotes collective efforts to fight the disease.

In 2025, World Osteoporosis Day will be observed on October 20. It is an excellent opportunity for everyone to reflect on their health and take steps to maintain strong and healthy bones throughout life.
