Every year, on the first Thursday of April, the inhabitants of the canton of Glarus celebrate the victory in the Battle of Näfels, which is an official holiday of the canton. The Battle of Näfels Memorial Day (Schlacht bei Näfels) in Switzerland is celebrated in memory of the key battle that took place on April 9, 1388. This battle between the troops of the canton of Glarus and the army of Duke Leopold III of Austria was an important moment in the history of Switzerland, as it strengthened the independence of the Swiss Confederation from external threats, in particular from the Habsburgs.
