World Hydrography Day is an international observance established by the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) and celebrated annually on 21 June. Its goal is to draw attention to the importance of hydrography and its contribution to maritime safety, sustainable development, and the protection of the marine environment.

History of the celebration

* The day was officially approved by the UN General Assembly in 2005.
* The idea originated within the activities of the International Hydrographic Organization, founded in 1921.
* Since 2006, the day has been celebrated annually in various countries around the world.

Objectives and significance of hydrography
Hydrography is the science that studies marine and inland waters, their depths, seabeds, currents, and other characteristics affecting navigation and coastal activities.

Main objectives:

* ensuring navigational safety
* supporting maritime trade
* assisting in the study of marine resources
* contributing to environmental monitoring and sustainable use of the marine environment

How World Hydrography Day is celebrated

* organizing scientific conferences and forums
* publishing special reports and documents
* educational events in schools and universities
* demonstrations of hydrographic equipment: echo sounders, survey vessels, etc.
* involvement of international organizations and maritime authorities

Theme of each year
Each year, the IHO sets a thematic focus for the celebration. Themes highlight current issues and priorities, such as:

* digitalization of nautical charts
* the role of hydrography in climate change
* sustainable development of the oceans

Interesting facts

* Without hydrography, it is impossible to create navigation charts used by ships worldwide.
