April 1 is celebrated in Cyprus as the National Revival Day or the Day of the Beginning of the Liberation Struggle against British colonial rule. This holiday is dedicated to the beginning of the armed struggle for independence, which was waged by the EOKA (Ethniki Organosis Kyprion Agoniston) organization from 1955 to 1959.

Goals and achievements
The goal of the EOKA struggle was to achieve independence from Great Britain and unification with Greece. As a result of negotiations in 1959, Cyprus gained independence, which was officially proclaimed on August 16, 1960.

How the holiday is celebrated
Official ceremonies. On this day, solemn events are held with the participation of government officials, veterans of the liberation movement and youth.

Memorial events. Wreaths are laid at monuments and memorials to EOKA fighters.

School events. Educational institutions organize history lessons dedicated to the struggle for independence.

Parades and cultural events. Some cities host parades, concerts and theatrical performances.
