Free Book Day in Germany is a day dedicated to distributing books to people, including those who cannot afford them. Also known as "Tag des freien Buches" or "Tag der kostenlosen Bücher", the day is a day to promote reading culture and equal access to knowledge. It was first held in 1929 and was celebrated on May 10, 1947 in Berlin by cultural representatives of all four sectors as a day of remembrance for the book burning in Germany in 1933.
