The International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste, observed on 29 September, was established by the United Nations to draw attention to the global problem of food loss and waste, which has significant impacts on food security, the economy and the environment.

Every year, about 1.3 billion tonnes of food is lost or wasted worldwide, which is more than a third of all food produced. These losses occur at all stages of the food chain, from farmers' fields to the end consumer. The main causes include inefficient production and storage methods, mismatches between supply and demand, improper food handling, and consumer habits.

Impact of Food Loss and Waste
Economic Impact. Food loss results in significant economic losses for both producers and consumers. Small farmers and producers suffer income losses, and food prices can increase.

Environmental Impact. Food waste places a serious strain on the environment. Food production consumes enormous resources, including water, land and energy, and wasted food emits methane, one of the most potent greenhouse gases contributing to climate change.

Social injustice. With millions of people suffering from hunger, food loss is a serious ethical issue. Effective food management could help improve access to food in poor regions and reduce hunger.

How can you help?
Change consumer habits. Buying and consuming food in the right quantities, storing and using leftovers correctly can significantly reduce food waste.

Support initiatives. Participation in food recycling projects and disseminating information on the importance of rational food consumption also plays an important role.

Legislative measures. Adopting laws and standards aimed at reducing food loss can contribute to a more efficient food production and distribution system.
