Columbus Day
October 12, Sunday

Geography of celebration
Although in the United States this holiday is known as Columbus Day and is observed on the second Monday of October, it is also widely celebrated in other countries:
* in Spain it is observed as National Day of Spain (Fiesta Nacional de España);
* in Latin American countries such as Mexico, Argentina, and Chile, it is called Day of the Race (Día de la Raza), emphasizing cultural diversity;
* in some countries, such as Venezuela, it is celebrated as Indigenous Resistance Day;
* in Italy, commemorative events are held related to Columbus’s legacy as a national hero.
Significance of the holiday
For different peoples, this day has particular meaning. For some, it symbolizes the beginning of cultural exchange between Europe and America, the opening of new opportunities and connections. For others, it is a reminder of colonization, loss of independence, and the suffering of indigenous peoples. Therefore, the holiday is perceived ambiguously and has undergone changes in name and content in many countries.
Holiday traditions
Celebration forms vary depending on the country:
* parades and cultural processions in the United States and Spain;
* festivals, concerts, and history lessons in Latin America;
* commemorative events dedicated to indigenous peoples, their culture, and rights;
* exhibitions and educational activities devoted to the Age of Exploration.
Modern significance
Today Columbus Day is not only a historical date but also an occasion for reflection. In some countries, the focus has shifted from honoring Columbus himself to respecting cultural diversity and acknowledging the complex consequences of the Age of Exploration. Thus, the holiday unites different approaches to understanding history and helps maintain dialogue between peoples.
