This day was established in 1999 to commemorate the first day of Estonian language instruction at a teacher training school. It also reminds of the importance of preserving the language and using it in everyday life, in the workplace, in educational institutions and in cultural events.
Meaning
Promotion of the language. Mother Tongue Day serves as a reminder of respect for Estonia’s linguistic heritage and the importance of using the Estonian language in various areas of life.
Educational events. Various competitions, events and lectures are held on this day to draw attention to language learning and the preservation of the Estonian language.
Cultural pride. This day also strengthens cultural identity and helps unite people around common values related to language and culture.
