Estonian Independence Day is celebrated on 24 February and is one of the country's most important national holidays. The day commemorates Estonia's declaration of independence from Russia in 1918.

History
Estonia declared its independence on 24 February 1918, when the Declaration of Independence was signed. This act was the result of a long-term effort by the Estonian people for autonomy and self-determination. Estonia subsequently achieved recognition of its independence after World War I, but was occupied by the Soviet Union in 1940 and then by Nazi Germany. Estonia regained its independence in 1991, following the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Celebration
Estonian Independence Day is celebrated with a variety of events, including:

Ceremonies. The capital Tallinn hosts official events attended by high-ranking officials, including the president, government, and military. A formal reception is usually held in the evening as part of the celebration.

Parade. Independence Day is marked by a military parade that demonstrates the strength and readiness of the country's armed forces. The parade takes place in Tallinn and includes military personnel, equipment, and musical groups.

Cultural events. Concerts, exhibitions, theatre performances, and other cultural events that reflect Estonian culture and heritage are held in various cities across Estonia on this day.

Family and community celebrations. Many families gather around the festive table, prepare traditional dishes, and spend time together. Citizens decorate their homes with Estonian flags and symbols.
