May 15, Thursday
Andalusia, Madrid
Saint Isidore's Day is one of the most important holidays in Madrid, celebrated annually on May 15. This day is dedicated to Saint Isidore Labrador, the patron saint of the city and peasants. The holiday combines religious traditions with folk festivals and symbolizes respect for the work on the land, fertility and history of Madrid. How is Saint Isidore's Day celebrated?
Religious events. The central event of the holiday is a pilgrimage to the spring of Saint Isidore, located near the San Isidro hermitage (Ermita de San Isidro). It is believed that the water from the spring has healing properties. Solemn masses and services are held in the San Isidro church, accompanied by prayers for the harvest, well-being and prosperity of the city.
Festivities. Grand street celebrations are held in Madrid. The central place is the San Isidro Park, where residents and tourists gather. People dress up in traditional Madrid costumes: men wear black waistcoats and caps (goyescos), and women wear dresses with lace and scarves.
Culinary traditions. It is customary to try local treats such as rosquillas de San Isidro (sweet doughnuts), which come in three varieties: tontas (plain), listas (glazed) and de Santa Clara (meal-glazed). Madrid dishes are also popular, including cocido madrileño (traditional Madrid soup).
Processions and concerts. Parades are organized with the participation of city orchestras, dance groups and decorated floats. Musical and theatrical performances, folkloric dances and chotis (traditional Madrid dance) performances take place in the city squares.
Fairs and entertainment. Fairs are held in the city where you can buy handicrafts, souvenirs and try national cuisine. For children, there are attractions, master classes and theatrical performances.
