History of the holiday
The holiday was created in 1986 to celebrate the historical role of Castile and León in the history of Spain. April 23 was chosen because it was the day in 982 that the Royal Community of Castile was founded in an important political event in medieval history, when Castile was united with its neighboring territories, which played a key role in the formation of the modern region. This day is also traditionally celebrated as the day of Saint George (Día de San Jorge), the patron saint of Castile and León.
How the holiday is celebrated
Ceremonies and celebrations. Official ceremonies are held in various cities of the region, attended by local authorities and cultural representatives. In Anda, the capital of the region, meetings and celebrations are held that highlight the role of Castile and Leon in the history of Spain.
Cultural events. The celebration includes various cultural events: exhibitions, theatre performances, concerts and folklore festivals dedicated to the traditions and culture of the region.
Gala receptions. At official celebrations, local authorities hold gala receptions and banquets attended by representatives of the government and the cultural elite of the region.
Festivals and traditions. Towns and villages host fairs and folk festivals in which local residents participate. On this day, special attention is paid to preserving the historical traditions of the region, such as folk dances, music and crafts.
