Feast of the Virgin of Almudena in Madrid
November 9, Sunday
Madrid
History and origin
The name “Almudena” comes from the Arabic word “al-madan,” meaning “fortress” or “citadel.” According to legend, the statue of the Virgin Mary was hidden within the walls of the Madrid fortress during the Muslim conquest to protect it from destruction. Several centuries later, after the return of Christian rule, the statue was miraculously discovered within the wall, forming the basis for its special veneration.
In 1646, Our Lady of Almudena was officially declared the patroness of Madrid, and in 1948 her image was crowned.
Main traditions of the festival
On this day, various religious and cultural events take place in the city:
* Solemn mass at the Almudena Cathedral.
* Procession through the central streets of Madrid involving priests, believers, and city authorities.
* Decoration of Plaza de la Almudena with flowers and religious symbols.
* Festive concerts and choir performances.
* Family gatherings and traditional dinners.
Many residents bring flowers to the statue of the Virgin Mary, creating a vibrant composition on the square in front of the cathedral.
