Feast of the Moors and Christians
April 24, Thursday
Valencia
The Moors and Christians Festival is a unique cultural event celebrated in various cities in Spain, mainly in the regions of Valencia, Murcia and Andalusia. This festival dates back to the historical events of the Reconquista, when Christian kingdoms reconquered territories from the Moors (Muslims) in the Iberian Peninsula. The main celebrations take place on different dates, depending on the city, but the most famous festival in the city of Alcoy (province of Alicante) is held annually from April 22 to 24. It is dedicated to Saint George (San Jorge), the patron saint of the city, whose intervention, according to legend, helped the Christians win the battle.
How is the festival celebrated?
The Moors and Christians Parade. Participants are divided into two groups - Moors and Christians. They wear richly decorated costumes, stylized to resemble the Middle Ages, and march in a solemn procession through the streets.
A mock battle. Theatrical reconstructions of key battles are staged.
First, the Moors "capture" the city, then the Christians "liberate" it.
Religious ceremony. A procession is held in honor of St. George, who is considered the patron saint of the holiday.
Fireworks and music. The festive atmosphere is complemented by bright fireworks, music and traditional dances.
