Festival of San Fermín
6 - July 13, Saturday – Saturday
Navarre
San Fermin is a famous Spanish festival that takes place annually in the city of Pamplona, in the region of Navarre, from July 6 to July 14. The festival is best known for its bull running (Encierro), but also includes other traditions such as fireworks, music, dancing and religious events.History of the festival
San Fermin was founded in honor of Saint Fermin, the patron saint of Navarre, and includes both religious and secular elements. The festival has its roots in the Middle Ages, when religious celebrations and fairs were held in honor of the saint. The tradition of bull running probably began as a way of transporting the bulls to the bullfighting arena, and over time it became an important part of the festival.
Main features of San Fermin
Bull running (Encierro). This is perhaps the most famous element of the festival. Every day from July 7th, participants dressed in white shirts and red armbands run in front of the bulls through the streets of the city from the central square to the bullring. The races take place in the morning and attract thousands of participants and spectators.
Bull racing is dangerous and involves a high risk of injury, but many people come to Pamplona specifically to experience the adrenaline rush and be part of this spectacle.
Bullfighting. The festival also includes bullfights (bullfights in the arena), which are an integral part of Spanish culture and tradition. During these days, Pamplona hosts special shows with professional matadors and bulls.
Religious processions. The festival includes religious events in honor of San Fermin. One of the most significant is the procession with the image of the saint through the streets of the city, which attracts a large number of locals and pilgrims.
Music, dancing and fireworks. In the evening and at night, Pamplona hosts music and dance events, as well as fireworks. The city square is filled with joy and everyone can participate in the street festivities.
Traditional clothing. Participants in the festival usually wear traditional clothing - white shirts and pants with red scarves or belts. This symbolizes the connection with tradition and respect for Saint Fermin.
