Cities for Life Day is celebrated annually on November 30 and aims to combat the death penalty. This day was first held in 2002 at the initiative of the Catholic Community of Sant'Egidio to highlight the importance of protecting life and to condemn the death penalty as an inhumane punishment. On this date in 1786, in the Grand Duchy of Tuscany (Italy), the death penalty was abolished for the first time in the world, which became a symbol of the humanist movement against executions.

How is Cities for Life Day celebrated
As part of this day, participating cities around the world illuminate or decorate historical buildings and monuments, symbolizing solidarity against the death penalty. More than 2,000 cities around the world take part in the event, and their number continues to grow. The actions are organized to draw attention to the problems of the death penalty and to raise awareness of the need for humanity and justice.
