History of the Carnival
The Carnival in Tenerife dates back to the 18th century when Spanish settlers brought carnival traditions to the region. For a long time, it was held in a closed format, but over time, it became a grand public event. During the Franco dictatorship, the carnival was officially banned, but the island's residents continued to celebrate it secretly under the guise of "Winter Festivals."
Main Events of the Carnival
– Election of the Carnival Queen – a competition where participants compete in luxurious costumes adorned with feathers, glitter, and precious stones.
– Carnival Opening – traditionally begins with a parade and performances by artists.
– Cabaret – costume performances filled with dance and music.
– Grand Parade (Coso Apoteosis) – a massive procession that concludes the main festivities.
– Burial of the Sardine – a satirical ceremony symbolizing the farewell to the carnival.
Where the Carnival Takes Place
The main events are concentrated in the capital of the island, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, but festive parades and parties also take place in other cities, such as Puerto de la Cruz.
When the Carnival Takes Place
The Carnival in Tenerife begins about three weeks before Lent and lasts until "Fat Tuesday." It usually takes place in February or early March.
