Valentine's Day is a holiday of love and romance that is celebrated annually on February 14. Although Valentine's Day has become a widely known commercial holiday, its history and traditions go deep into the past, including Christian and ancient Roman culture.

The history of Saint Valentine himself is shrouded in myths and legends. According to one version, Valentine was a priest who lived in the 3rd century in the Roman Empire during the reign of Emperor Claudius II. Claudius, seeking to strengthen his army, forbade soldiers from marrying, believing that unmarried men would be more devoted to military affairs. The priest Valentine secretly married lovers, despite this ban. For this, he was arrested and sentenced to death. Legend has it that while in prison, Valentine fell in love with the jailer's daughter and before his execution wrote her a letter, signing it "your Valentine" - this expression has become one of the symbols of the holiday.

Valentine's Day Traditions:
Sending valentines is one of the most famous and oldest traditions of the holiday. The first written valentine is believed to have been sent by Charles, Duke of Orleans, to his wife in 1415 while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London. Over time, exchanging love notes and cards became a widespread tradition. Today, cards are decorated with hearts, angels, and romantic inscriptions.

Flowers. Flowers, especially red roses, have become one of the main symbols of Valentine's Day. The rose is associated with the goddess of love Venus (or Aphrodite in Greek mythology), and that is why it symbolizes passion and romance. Giving roses on this day has become a traditional way of expressing feelings for a loved one.

Chocolate and Candy. Giving sweets on Valentine's Day has also become a popular tradition, especially since the 18th century. By the mid-19th century, candy manufacturers in Europe and the United States began offering heart-shaped chocolates in special holiday packages. Today, boxes of chocolates and candies are among the most popular gifts for this holiday.

Gifts. In addition to cards and flowers, people often give each other various gifts such as jewelry, soft toys, perfumes and other romantic symbols. One of the popular gifts is also shared activities such as candlelight dinners, going to the theater or a concert to spend time together with your loved one.
