Tamborrada dates back to the 19th century, when locals began using barrels and pots to create rhythms and noises to celebrate the day of Saint Sebastian, the patron saint of the city. Since then, the tradition has grown and transformed into a large-scale event that remains popular to this day.
How to Celebrate Tamborrada
Drummers' Parade. The centerpiece of the festival is the drummers' parade, which begins at midnight. Participants, dressed in traditional uniforms, gather in the square and begin to play the drums. This creates a unique atmosphere of fun and unity.
Costumes. Participants often wear traditional costumes, which can range from ancient to modern. Many wear white shirts and black trousers, complemented by an apron and other accessories.
Culinary traditions. During Tamborrada, there are also various gastronomic events, where traditional Basque dishes such as tapas and pintxos are offered. Local restaurants and bars prepare special menus to celebrate the holiday.
Activities for children. On Tamborrada day, various activities for children are also organized, including drumming workshops and other activities.
The finale of the holiday. The celebration continues until the early morning of the next day, with music, dancing and shared feasts.
