History of the holiday
Located on the northern coast of Spain, Cantabria has a unique culture and history. The holiday arose as a way to preserve and pass on to future generations the traditions and customs of the region. It was officially approved in 1972 to highlight the identity of the Cantabrian people and their ancient Celtic heritage.
How is Cantabria Day celebrated?
Traditional dances and music. The main elements of the holiday are folk dances and musical performances, including the performance of gaitas (Cantabrian bagpipes) and other traditional instruments.
Historical reconstructions. The day often features theatrical performances that commemorate historical events, such as the ancient struggle between the Cantabrians and the Romans.
Festivities and fairs. The streets of towns and villages fill with people enjoying traditional food, drink and crafts. In some places, fairs are held where local crafts are sold.
Sports competitions. The festival features competitions in traditional sports such as rugby, tug-of-war and local games using wooden blocks.
