History of the event
Louis XVI, who reigned since 1774, faced increasing economic and political difficulties in the country. After the Revolution of 1789, he was overthrown, arrested and accused of treason. After a lengthy trial, he was sentenced to death. On January 21, 1793, Louis XVI was executed by guillotine on Place de la Révolution in Paris (now Place de la République).
