European Day of the Righteous
March 6, Wednesday
The European Day of the Righteous Among the Nations is celebrated annually on 6 March. The day was established by the European Parliament in 2012 on the initiative of the Italian NGO Gariwo (Garden of the Righteous Worldwide) and is dedicated to the memory of people who have shown courage and humanity in helping others, defending the dignity and lives of people, despite persecution, war and other tragic circumstances. The holiday recalls the so-called "Righteous Among the Nations" - people who, risking their lives, opposed genocide, violence and crimes against humanity.Who are the Righteous Among the Nations?
The Righteous Among the Nations are people of different nationalities, religions and professions who have shown perseverance in the face of oppression and suffering. Examples of such people include:
Saviors of Jews during the Holocaust;
People who saved Armenians from genocide in the Ottoman Empire;
Defenders of human rights under dictatorships and totalitarian regimes;
All those who have supported and protected persecuted minorities.
How is the European Day of the Righteous Among the Nations celebrated?
Ceremonies and commemorative events. Ceremonies dedicated to the memory of the righteous are held in various cities across Europe. One of the well-known symbols of the holiday is the Gardens of the Righteous, created in memory of people who saved others from persecution and injustice.
Educational programs. Lectures, film screenings, discussions and thematic events are held in schools and universities to tell about the righteous among the nations and their deeds.
Tree planting. The holiday often includes planting trees in the Gardens of the Righteous, symbolizing the memory and respect for those who spoke out against cruelty and violence, choosing the path of peace and humanity.
Recognition and awards. In some countries, as well as within the framework of the Gariwo initiative, new righteous people whose deeds become known are awarded on this day. This allows us to recall modern examples of civic responsibility and dedication.
