The Festival of Lights in Lyon, or Fête des Lumières, takes place annually in early December and is one of the most famous light festivals in the world. Its origins are linked to an event in 1852, when the residents of Lyon lit candles in their windows to celebrate the installation of the statue of the Virgin Mary on the Fourvière hill. Since then, the tradition has grown into a large-scale city celebration of light.

When it is held
The festival usually lasts four days around December 8. During this time, the entire city transforms into a huge open-air stage where architects, artists, and lighting designers create impressive installations.
