History of the holiday
March 12 was chosen as the day of renewal because it was the day on which Gabon held presidential elections in 2009 following the death of Omar Bongo, who had been in power for 41 years. The new president, Ali Bongo Ondimba, won the election and became the first president of the country to succeed his father.
