World Day of Music is an international celebration dedicated to the universal language of music. It takes place annually on June 21 and coincides with the summer solstice. The holiday aims to encourage musical creativity, access to music, and the participation of the general public in musical culture.

History of the holiday:
The holiday was first held in France in 1982 at the initiative of Culture Minister Jack Lang. Under the name Fête de la Musique, it became part of cultural policy to promote the arts among the population. Its idea was to bring music to the streets, making it free and accessible to all — performers and listeners alike.

The success of the holiday quickly spread beyond France. Today it is celebrated in more than 120 countries and 700 cities worldwide.

How it is celebrated:

* Street concerts and musical parades
* Open stages for professionals and amateurs
* Free performances in parks, squares, and subways
* School and educational music events
* Online concerts, broadcasts, flash mobs, and social media campaigns

Goals of the holiday:

* Make music accessible to everyone
* Support musical diversity and cross-cultural exchange
* Inspire people to participate in musical creativity
* Emphasize the role of music in society, culture, education, and psycho-emotional development

Participation format:
The holiday is based on principles of openness and freedom. Anyone, regardless of age, nationality, or professional level, can participate — just go outside and play, sing, or listen.

Interesting facts:

* The holiday’s motto in France is “Faites de la musique!” — “Make music!”
* In Italy, Germany, Brazil, India, and the USA, World Day of Music is celebrated with local traditions
* Some cities grant special permits for street performances only on this day
