Mtskhetoba is one of the significant state and religious holidays of Georgia, celebrated annually in the ancient city of Mtskheta. It is also called Svetitskhovloba, as the holiday is dedicated to the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral — one of the most sacred places of Georgian Orthodoxy.

Date of celebration
Mtskhetoba is celebrated every year on October 14. On this day, pilgrims and tourists from all over the country come to Mtskheta to take part in the festivities.

Historical significance
Mtskheta was the ancient capital of the Iberian Kingdom (Ancient Georgia) and is considered the spiritual center of the country. The holiday is associated with the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, built in the 11th century, which is believed to house the robe of Jesus Christ.

Religious significance
The main part of the holiday is the solemn liturgy held at the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral. The service is led by the Catholicos-Patriarch of all Georgia. Believers pray, light candles, and thank God for blessings and protection.
