Liberation Day in Guernsey is an important holiday celebrated annually on 9 May. It commemorates the liberation of Guernsey from German occupation at the end of World War II. Guernsey, like the other Channel Islands, was occupied by Nazi Germany from 1940 to 1945.

On 9 May 1945, following the surrender of Nazi Germany, the Channel Islands, including Guernsey, were liberated by British troops. This was a significant moment for locals, as the islands had endured more than 5 years of occupation, during which brutal reprisals were used, as well as an economic blockade.

How the holiday is celebrated
Ceremonies and parades. On Liberation Day in Guernsey, there are official ceremonies and parades, attended by local residents, veterans, and government officials. The parades are often accompanied by a march of former soldiers and other participants in the events of that time.
