World IBD Day is an international date, celebrated annually on May 19, aimed at raising awareness about inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.

What is IBD
Inflammatory bowel diseases are chronic autoimmune conditions where the immune system attacks the tissues of the digestive tract, causing inflammation. The main forms are:

* Crohn’s disease: can affect any part of the digestive tract
* Ulcerative colitis: limited to the colon and rectum

Symptoms may include abdominal pain, diarrhea, weight loss, fatigue, and anemia.

History of the Day
World IBD Day was initiated by the European Federation of Crohn’s and Ulcerative Colitis Associations (EFCCA) and was first held in 2010. The initiative was joined by medical organizations and patient communities worldwide.

Purpose of the Day
World IBD Day aims to:

* Spread information about the symptoms and treatment of IBD
* Reduce the stigmatization of patients
* Draw attention to the needs and quality of life of patients
* Support scientific research and improve diagnosis

* Lighting buildings in purple — the color of the campaign

* Joining the international social media flashmob

Symbol of the Day
Purple has become the symbol of solidarity with people living with inflammatory bowel diseases.

Why It Matters
IBD often remains "invisible," but it can significantly impact the quality of life, especially in young people. Early detection and proper therapy significantly increase the chances of long-term remission.
