Guinea Independence Day is celebrated annually on October 2. On this day in 1958, the country became the first French colony in West Africa to vote for full independence from France. Under the leadership of Ahmed Sékou Touré, Guinea refused to participate in the Community proposed by France and declared the creation of a sovereign state.
